He churns out colorful stories about sex that his eager readers voraciously devour. He adopts the colorful pseudonym of `Mastram’ becomes the first author of the first pornographic novel seriesin the Hindi language. Rajaram, scandalized at first, accedes to the “compromise”, and thus starts discovering another facet of literature – erotica. It’s on everybody’s mind, but no one will admit it. He introduces Rajaram to the salacious and secret world of soft pornography. Chacha is an anomaly in the hypocritical society we live in – he is unashamed of showing Rajaram the spicier side of life and of saying it out loud. He is not sure what it means to bring that to his writing – till he meets Chacha, an eccentric, old village Idiot. The only meaning of `masala’ familiar to him is the kind that adds spice to food. Rajaram is initially miffed by this writing brief. Rajaram would have to add some necessary sensational elements to his dull tale – some `masala’, as they refer to euphemistically.
They agree to publish Rajaram’s story about the plight of a small town girl. They tell him he should stick to writing text book material, and give up fanciful ideas of writing a novel.įinally, Rajaram encounters a fledgling publisher duo – Purohit and his brother-in-law, Bharti. Turning a deaf ear to the all the snubs, Rajaram starts in earnest to show his work to several publishers. Rajaram becomes a butt of all jokes in the neighborhood. But, being a stay-at-home writer doesn’t go down too well with prying neighbors, who are quick to pass judgment on other peoples’ lives. To his utter surprise and delight, Renu unstintingly supports his decision, and starts doing odd jobs from home, while Rajaram begins to focus completely on his writing. Edged on by her encouragement, Rajaram starts stealing writing time from his humdrum work routine, and is eventually forced to leave his job, when his boss publicly humiliates him, and derides his fancy aspirations. Although a simpleton, Renu wholeheartedly supports her husband’s ambition.
No one takes his litterateur aspirations seriously, least of all his uncle, who marries him off to the beautiful Renu. I would suggest not. Rahul Bagga and Tara Berry are convincing for most of their parts in the movie. There are, nonetheless, a few high points in the film. He is happy that he has fodder for one more Mastram story. The protagonist, who is supposed to be a 'clean' writer, is forced to write porn when he sees his wife having sex with his friend.

The developments in Rajaram aka Mastram's life are too abrupt to develop any emotional connect with the audience.Īnother sore point is the stereotypical objectification of women in the movie as mere sex objects. Secondly, Mastram also lets down people looking forward to watch the life of a writer like Mastram. The film doesn't even cater to people looking for the relieving Mastram era of 1980s. Not enough to qualify for an erotica.Įven in the most hard-hitting story of Mastram, the one where he talks about his own wife's sexual adventures, all you see is a messy Tara Alisha Berry (Rajaram's wife) mixing sex with cooking in a fling with her husband's friend.

There is some skin show, stripping and heaving that you are subjected to, but there's only so much. The movie falls short of an erotica (or porn, whichever term you prefer) you can enjoy. First of all, all fans of Mastram planning a nostalgic visit to the theatres will be disappointed.
